horny4hawks:insatiablejudge:hello kny/demon slayer fans! i would really appreciate if you guys would use the canon, modified version of tanjiro’s earrings when drawing fanart/merch for him! the rising sun flag is known throughout east and southeast asia as an imperialistic war time flag and it was used during WW2 to commit cultural genocide, mass ra/pe and forced prostitution of hundreds of thousands of women and children, and massacring innocent civilians by the japanese imperial army. i know many of you want to use the “most canon” version of tanjiro’s earrings, but it is a very controversial flag that has very serious and hurtful implications behind it. i implore you all to read up on japanese war crimes as they STILL affect modern japan’s relationship with south korea and other countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimesthank you all so much, and thank you for understanding. edit: in my previous version, i wrote “south asia” instead of “southeast asia”! i really apologize for the mistake, i kind of whipped this up pretty quickly and didn’t realize until someone brought it up to me. i really apologize since this is supposed to be an informative post and i’ll try to proofread posts like this in the future!hello fellow SE asians,, Do take note that OP has apologized for mistakenly referring to Japanese occupation of South Asia when they meant Southeast Asia, lumping se asians together with e asians, and speaking over the se asians who raised questions. They’ve also acknowledged that their perspective is mostly from their lived experience as a Korean person, and Japanese imperialism has affected territories & communities across asia differently. In this regard, I believe it best for us to adopt the same awareness of different perspectives. Even if some of us in the se asian region see no issue with the rising sun flag, this is definitely not the case in JP & KR (and for their diaspora residing elsewhere).South Korea urges Japan to ban Rising Sun Flag at Tokyo 2020 as diplomatic feud continuesProtest sign translations (thank you niki for translating, and luka for verifying):“Exterminate!! Savage China and Korea, Asian Allied Powers (obscured)”“All Korean Women = rotten prostitutes”“A race of criminals using false names” -> this is a reference to Zainichi Koreans (descendants of Koreans living in Japan usually those who migrated to/worked in Japan during the annexation of Korea) who adopt JP names in order to not be discriminated againstthere’s a sign blocked but mentions AIDS and prostitutes, so its likely another shot at comfort women“Slaughter all enemies who bear a grudge against us // Slaughter all Koreans”“Virus-infected 700 tons of kimchi / unaccounted for / don’t put it in your mouth” probably likening Koreans to rotten kimchi, as the KR population in JP is 700,000I’ve seen OP accused of “nitpicking”, as if they were carefully combing the show/manga for problematic elements, when its much more likely that the RS flag was something they noticed immediately, with it being such a recognizable, politically-charged symbol in their own community & region. In addition, its unsurprising that Korean people might have a higher alertness towards icons of Japanese imperialism, given their oppression under the JP empire lasted much longer (1910-1945) than our own subjugation in WW2 (1940s-1945). Even as fellow survivors of JP war crimes, each of our communities have a different dynamic & history with our former occupier. It’s rather inappropriate for us to dismiss OP’s concerns with the design, or for us to tell Koreans how to engage with their own history of occupation and its surviving elements. Some fans have pointed out that the design is meant to be hanafuda, and so its resemblance to the RS flag is coincidental - thus the series bears no purposeful nationalistic / imperialistic agenda. I myself can believe its possible the resemblance was unconscious, unintentional, accidental, and only picked up by Chinese & Korean censors. Regardless of its intent, its been so widely mistaken as the RS flag that it evokes a similar effect - is it worth it? Clearly not to the production team - their decision to change the design for their foreign audience - who see a resemblance to the flag and are affected by it - seems an appropriate response that accommodates sensitivities. This is the crux of OP’s post: they’re not trying to denounce the series, they’re just reminding us of this official modification, explaining the reason, and requesting we adopt it.Even if, at this point, you are not convinced of the RS flag’s political weight, and think that your fellow SE Asians and Koreans are overstating its ties to JP war crimes, this is a simple aesthetic change easily done to avoid the potentially loaded implications of the original design. Modifying it is preferable to offending & excluding a whole community - it costs us nothing to stop using the rising sun flag in artwork (whether in the demon slayer fandom or elsewhere) out of respect for Koreans. -- source link
