gffa:gffa:Star Wars: The Clone Wars | “A Distant Echo”DEE BRADELY BAKER: “The scene where Rex is guarding the door so that Anakin can speak to Padme is a very funny scene. Rex has never played that kind of a character. But it is interesting to learn that Obi-Wan, he’s kind of aware of something else going on with Anakin. But it’s also kind of sweet. It’s a nice insight into the connection of these friends, of these co-soldiers, and these brothers.”JAMES ARNOLD TAYLOR: “We went through this a lot of different ways, a lot of different times, back to the studio, back and forth, and Dave really finessing. He wanted to get that scene right for everybody, and he wanted all ofus to feel the feelings that Anakin was feeling, that Rex was feeling, and Obi-Wan. And I get to do the cherry on top in that scene where, you know–‘I hope you at least said hello to Padme.’ And it’s just such a nice little tip of the hat of ‘I know what’s going on here.’DAVE FILONI: “Obi-Wan’s not dumb. He knows Anakin’s in love with this woman. I don’t think he ever understands that they got married. I don’t think he thinks Anakin took it that far. I mean, even Obi-Wan was in love with someone. That’s not abnormal. It’s very normal. What you choose to do and how you choose to have a relationship, what you sacrifice, then that becomes a bigger deal when he’s made an oath to the Jedi Order to be selfless, to put everyone else ahead of himself. And he never thinks that two of them would do something so drastic. But it dawns on him over time that they have.”My favorite part of this is, “What you choose to do and how you choose to have a relationship, what you sacrifice, then that becomes a bigger deal when [Anakin has] made an oath to the Jedi Order to be selfless, to put everyone else ahead of himself. And [Obi-Wan] never thinks that two of them would do something so drastic. But it dawns on him over time that they have.“This is at the heart of what is at stake when a Jedi decides what path they want to be on–whether they want to devote themselves to selflessly helping others or to embrace this very personal oath to the person you’re committing yourself to.Neither choice is bad, both have incredible meaning and are incredibly good things, if they’re the right path for you. Both paths have meaning and importance. But it’s about what you choose. Anakin’s not bad for wanting to have a relationship with Padme, his mistake is that he made an oath to the Jedi Order, one that he has been entrusted to keep unless he makes the choice to leave. The Jedi do not punish anyone who chooses to leave–they speak warmly of them, the Jedi know this is an option for any one of them at any point, whether they’re an initiate, a Padawan, a Knight, or a Master. They’re trusting Anakin to uphold those oaths unless he tells them otherwise. The problem with Anakin is that he doesn’t really want to be committed to the Jedi Order, he doesn’t want to keep his oath that he made, but he still wants all the granted authority that being a Jedi gives him. He wants all the perks, but none of the sacrifice that these responsibilities entail. That is why Obi-Wan is so frustrated with Anakin. Not because Anakin has feelings for Padme–Obi-Wan has known that probably since at least Attack of the Clones and certainly since “The Rise of Clovis”–but that Anakin is disrespecting the vows he took and refusing to choose. Obi-Wan doesn’t realize how far Anakin’s gone with this, he still thinks it’s just feelings, maybe some hook-ups, but he can see what Anakin is refusing to do, refusing to make a choice, and that’s an insult to both the Jedi and to whatever potential relationship he might have with Padme. And Obi-Wan’s right about that, the phrasing of the above commentary is clear that the oaths the Jedi take are good things for them, just as good as marriage vows are to those who take them. Anakin’s refusal to choose, his inability to be selfless when the critical moment came, is what helped burn down the Republic, despite that he was placed in the positions he was because he swore to be selfless in those same critical moments. -- source link
