archaicwonder:Paranormal activity in the Roman ColosseumThe Colosseum was first known as the “Flavian Amphitheater”, built by the Emperor Vespasian and completed under the rule of his son Titus in 80 AD. Thousands of animals and humans suffered and died within this arena for the entertainment of Roman citizens. Some of those unfortunate souls fated to fight here were prisoners of war, gladiators, criminals, slaves, religious martyrs and other undesirables. They died in hand to hand combat or were torn apart by animals. It is estimated that 5000 or more animals were killed here, leading to the extinction of some species.Nowadays, hundreds of thousands of tourists come to see the Colosseum in Rome each year and many, including Colosseum employees, report hearing or seeing something they can’t explain. Still doing their job after thousands of years, Roman soldiers have been reported standing guard at entry points to the Colosseum and on the upper ramparts where they are silhouetted against the sky, still watching over the crowd, ready to protect their Emperor.Once inside, disembodied screams and moans have been reported in various places. Apparitions of people have appeared on the staircases and some are even seen sitting in the Colosseum seats, still watching a long past show in the arena below. At times the cheers of an invisible crowd have been heard. Other sounds reported are the clangs of swords clashing, chariot wheels turning and the cries of wounded men and animals. The vaults underneath the Colosseum is where prisoners, deadly beasts and gladiators waited to fight to the death. This area contains unexplainable cold spots along with reports of people being touched, pushed or having Latin words whispered in their ear. The forlorn sound of crying has been reported as well. The most alarming activity reported is the sound of growling and roaring. Fortunately a phantom lion can’t actually eat you, but if you have a weak heart I would be a bit wary when visiting the Colosseum. The Discovery Channel made an excellent documentary on the Colosseum and you can watch it free online here.More Colosseum history… -- source link
