scifimagpie: vintagegeekculture: Mary Jane was always my favorite of the superhero girlfriends because she was kind of a happy go lucky, odd duck. I stan superhero girlfriends in general. Like, I just connect with the heroine’s wife/love interest/etc’s struggles. What’s it like being the Girl/Heart on the team? what’s it like knowing your loved one is in danger? Women do a lot of work to hold down the fort, and that takes a lot more internal strength and fortitude than people realise. You aren’t just sitting there waiting for the plot to use you - you’re surviving. I like how you think, and if you agree, I think you should read the later issues of New Defenders. Essentially, Warren Worthington III’s girlfriend Candy Southern took over the group by sheer force of personality. She was elected leader of the team despite not being a superhero or having any powers in New Defenders #138. Imagine if Lois Lane became the de-facto leader and master of ceremonies of the JLA and you’d see how extraordinary a personality she had. As Warren’s wealth was mainly tied up, Candy Southern was the one who supported the group financially: it was mentioned she was even wealthier than Warren was. When was the last time a superhero’s girlfriend took care of a broke superhero going through a rough time? When was the last time a “superhero girlfriend” designed a superhero base or was generally the stronger personality of the two (it was often shown that she made decisions for both)?By the way, her being elected leader of the Defenders was unanimous.Candy gave the Defenders support, chewed out their more disobedient and more powerful members when they acted up, and finally, she even laid down her life to save Warren, the man she loved, not once but twice (in her second resurrection, she was used as a weapon by Cameron Hodge, but something of Candy’s real personality came through and she stopped the attack and died rather than be used as a weapon of revenge). It’s also worth noting that in X-Men: the Hidden Years, Candy was the only homo sapiens ever given full access to the X-Mansion and trusted completely by Professor X. She is one of the few X-Men supporting cast to be introduced prior to the Claremont Years and the only one of consequence to stick around (I wonder where the Beast’s geek-girl librarian girlfriend Zelda is these days?)I’d say, without hesitation, that Angel’s girlfriend Candy Southern was easily the best written hero girlfriend of her time and a model for how to write characters like this going forward. -- source link
