baepsrae: cruelsummerofsteroids: Direct Provision started in 1999 as a means for housing asylum seekers in Ireland. Designed as a temporary base for six months this accommodation system holds families in isolated areas with little or no access to basic services for years. Parents have reported spending a minimum of three years in deplorable conditions; with whole families in one room, including children, and individuals sleeping on mattresses. This causes long-term damage to health, educationally disadvantages children and adults, and isolates asylum seekers from the Irish community. This is compounding the damage already experienced by asylum seekers who have fled dangerous conditions such as war, genocide or persecution. The Twenty-seventh Amendment of the Constitution Act 2004 amended the Constitution of Ireland to limit the constitutional right to Irish citizenship of individuals born on the island of Ireland to the children of Irish citizens. This means children born in Ireland to non-Irish parents are not granted citizenship. This is an injustice and must be repealed. Some facts about Direct Provision:Right now there are 6,405 people in DP.People living in DP are only given 38.80 Euro a week to live on (in comparison, in MINIMUM someone on jobseekers allowance gets a week would be just over 90 euro… still not enough, but yeah). Until 2018, people in DP were not allowed to work. Although they technically are allowed to now, they must be living in this system for a minimum of 9 months before they can even apply for a work permit.People living in DP share rooms with up to 8 people, often complete strangers. This is what they look like: In August 2018, Sylva Tukula, a black trans woman living in an all male direct provision centre took her own life. She was buried alone after the department of justice and the police failed to inform any of her loved one in Ireland of her death and funeral. In the majority of DP centres, there are no facilities for residents to cook for themselves. Food is served in a canteen at 3 set times a day. The catering is provided by Aramark, the largest providers of prison meals in the USA. In 2018 they made 5.89 million euro from Direct Provision centres. This is what the food looks like:HERE is a link to petitions you can sign and places to donate (if you can) to support BLM in both the US and Ireland, and to end direct provision and repeal the 27th amendment in Ireland. -- source link
