13 May 1568: Mary Queen of Scots is defeated. The year before, she had been forced to abdicate and was imprisoned. She escaped and raised an army, but they were beaten at the Battle of Langside fighting against the Scottish Protestants under James Stewart. It was the beginning of the end for Mary. Three days later, she fled to England, seeking protection from Elizabeth I, but her Catholicism and claim to the English throne would prove too dangerous for her cousin to ignore. After 18 years under watch, Mary was beheaded. Watercolour by Francois Clouet, 1558-1560. © PAINTING, Alamy -- source link
