medievalpoc:skemono submitted to medievalpoc:Another superhero comic, again from Marvel: Mighty Avengers, written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Greg Land (I apologize to those of you who recognize that name).Unlike a lot of teams, which are mostly white men with a few people of color or white women, the Mighty Avengers are mostly people of color. We have Adam Brashear, the Blue Marvel:Ava Ayala, the White Tiger:Eric Brooks, Blade:Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk:Luke Cage, former Power Man:Monica Rambeau, currently Spectrum:Sam Wilson, Falcon:Victor Alvarez, current Power Man:Aside from having a diverse cast, Mighty Avengers is a very well-written work, with lots of humor, character focus, and action. The art, on the other hand, is not great. Greg Land is well known for making his pages by tracing reference photos, which can lead to stilted poses & faces, and characters who look the same (particularly women). Fortunately, as Falcon will be taking up the Captain America mantle, the series will be changing its name to Captain America and the Mighty Avengers and will get a new artist. Also, in contrast to Ms. Marvel, this series might be a bit hard to get into for people new to comics. All the characters are pre-existing, several having been created decades ago, and the comic does make use of their pasts. It also participates in some of the company event comics, which can be confusing. But in the days of the internet it’s pretty easy to look up things if you want to know what’s being referenced, and it doesn’t necessarily hurt the comic if you don’t know everything (I’d never read a single comic featuring most of these people when I picked it up and I still enjoy it). I still recommend it, but fair warning. -- source link
