thenewwomensmovement:allthefandomfeelings:lyssamae:face-down-asgard-up:darkwitch666:Boudica,Celtic warrior queen. Boudica is a completely overlooked figure in history. She is hardly mentioned in any Roman history class, save for a brief note on the ‘Boadicea Revolt’, and she was nearly forgotten and lost to time until very recently. The spelling of her name is variable, from the Roman ‘Boadicea’ to various Celtic forms such as ‘Bodika’. Her story is tragic, defiant, and brilliant. Take a few minutes to look her up, or go to your local library and pick up a book on her and the Icenii tribe. I promise you won’t be disappointed.TW: Mention of rapeBoudica was bad-ass.Boudica’s husband was the King of the Icenii which were allies to Rome and paid some allegiance. When he died, he left his kingdom to his two daughters and to the Roman Emperor, to be ruled jointly as it had been for years. The Romans ignored this. They annexed his lands, all loans were called in, Queen Boudica was flogged, and then her daughters were raped in front of her.Boudica said, “Fuck these motherfuckers.” and led a revolt of the Iceni and other tribes that resulted in the cities Camulodunum ( Colchester ), Londinium ( London ), and Verulamium ( St. Albans ) being sacked and burned to the ground. About 70,000 - 80,000 people were killed.Boudica was fucking up shit so bad that Nero very nearly pulled all Roman forces out of Britain. Her armies were eventually defeated, but she didn’t go down without making sure the Romans felt it.Fun fact: my ex’s family’s old van was named Boudica. Badass. Also she’s said to be buried under King’s Cross Station somewhere under and between platforms 8 and 10What a badass. -- source link
