shittydinosaurdrawings: This morning on the bus to work I overheard a woman complaining about her father getting dinosaur toys for her daughter, because she said dinosaurs are for boys, and the guy she was talking to was agreeing with her. I’m always shocked when I’m reminded that people Like That actually exist. I wanted to say something, but I’m shy and bad at confrontation, and she probably wouldn’t have listened anyways, so I just sat there silently fuming and was angry for the rest of the morning. The simple fact that dinosaur toys are for anyone who wants to play with dinosaur toys is one of those things that’s so blatantly obvious to me that I forget it needs to be said, but apparently it does. When I visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum last year I saw lots of little girls there, admiring the skeletons and cooing over the prehistoric fish and having a grand time, as one does. Because dinosaur are cool and are for everyone, and children in general really like dinosaurs. There are so many women working in the field of palaeontology, and there have been since palaeontology was a science. Mary Anning was a very important palaeontologist & fossil collector who lived from 1799-1847, and now it’s 2019 and I had to sit there and listen to some horribly misguided fool rant about how having an F on your birth certificate means a 3 year old shouldn’t have dinosaur toys. RIDICULOUS. I’m getting angry again thinking about it, and I very rarely get angry. As a trans person I’m extremely glad my parents aren’t like that ignorant lady on the bus, because growing up surrounded by that would have been hell. I can only hope the 3 year old in question grows up to have better opinions than her mother. I was going to look up some articles with research showing how harmful enforcing gender roles is to all children (because It Really Really Is, Like Really Bad) but it’s late and I’m too tired to read stuff so I’m going to go to bed. Goodnight. -- source link
