crispy-ghee: isei-silva:crispy-ghee:Mas y Manos - Día de Todos los SantosJT meets Mas’s parents for the first time when he comes as Mas’s guest to her family’s celebration of todos los santos. Due to a series of complications–mostly arising because of his running away 10 years ago–he is unable to celebrate with his own family. He is extremely nervous. He and Mas have been in a relationship for a little while at that point (not counting their “will-they-won’t-they” days), but they have decided to keep their relationship quiet from her parents. So, it isn’t like there is the same level of scrutiny from them as if they knew Mas was taking home a boyfriend but…he’s very nervous anyway. And not very good at hiding it. Mas, though, is being very casual about it.They are nice people though, very welcoming. JT brings gifts of polvoron and pastillas de leche (from his ninong/godfather’s sari-sari store). Mas presents gas station wine. Happy Todos los Santos everyone!Mas belongs to @isei-silva Feliz Todos los Santos!Much in Dia de los Muertos, it’s tradition that during Todos los Santos, family visit the graves of their departed loved ones and leave something for them. Mas takes it a little too casually, but hey, her parents don’t know it’s gas station wine at least. We love how our different cultures still have so much in common! Todos los Santos/Undás (derived from the Spanish ‘honras’–with honors)/Araw na mga Patay (Day of the Dead) is celebrated every year in the Philippines, packing cemeteries to clean and repair your loved ones’ graves; make offerings of prayers, candles, flowers, food, etc; and sometimes staying the night at the cemetery, spending time with family and having a bit of a fiesta. JT, as half mexican/half filipino, grew up with the Mexican and Filipino celebrations intermixing. Mas’s family’s celebrations are not exactly the same as the ones he grew up with, but he is happy to be able to participate after years of not being able to, even if it is not with his own family. One fun thing about Mas y Manos definitely has been being able to share my culture with someone and talk about the similarities and differences that our cultures share. It’s been a learning experience, and imbuing this story with these things has been great. -- source link
