demifiendrsa:The Konami Code creator Kazuhisa Hashimoto has passed away on February 25, 2020.Hashimoto had joined Konami in 1981. He was a programmer and producer for the home console port of Gradius, which in 1986 was the first video game to use the Konami Code. Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created a cheat code to give the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game). The code was still present in the released version after Hashimoto forgot to remove it. Players discovered and shared the code. The Konami Code was thus included in the series’ other sequels and spin-offs. The Konami Code would also be used to playtest other games made by the publisher. The Konami code became more popularized among North American players with the NES release of Contra, which sold more copies than Gradius. It was also dubbed both the “Contra Code” and “30 Lives Code”, due to its near necessity in-game.The Konami code has been subsequently re-used as easter eggs and to unlock hidden tricks in countless other games and websites. -- source link
