medievalpoc:vinegardoppio:here’s a roman carving of a penis with wings and legs having a penis where its penis should be as well as a penis coming out of its buttthe romans were laughing at dickbutt over 2000 years before the internetI think it’s time to lighten the mood of Ancient Art Week, and it’s been far too long since I used the NSFW tag.Roman Polyphallus, c. 1st Century C. E.Grey Marble, 36.8cm.Here’s the museum description for this artwork at the Bakarat Gallery:This unusual creation known as the polyphallus is a fantastical composite winged penis. Presumably, it functioned as a symbol of fertility and sexual potency. The Greek inscription which runs across the top of the panel can be translated as ‘friendly neighbour.’ Although surviving representations of the polyphallus on stone panels are very rare, they also appear on bronze bells, known as tintinnabulum. In this context their purpose was partly to ward off the evil eye. It was not uncommon in the Roman art for phalluses to be transformed into animals by the addition of legs, tails and wings. This may be related to the idea of the independence of this organ, often much less under its owner’s control than he might wish. On another level it was no doubt intended to be amusing and light-hearted. [Rubens, Drunken Silenus, 1616] -- source link
