Holiday Tree and Municipal Menorah, Old Town Square, Fairfax City, 2018.As the Jewish celebration of the relatively minor holiday of Hanukah draws to its end, this display in a city park raises some interesting issues. In a compromise to allow display of the Pagan-Christian tree, it was necessary to include a menorah, although the Jewish population in the city is quite small (there are no major Jewish religious facilities inside the city limits). These two symbols hardly cover the range of religious beliefs present in the city of about 40,000 inhabitants. In addition to Christians, Pagans and Jews, there are significant numbers of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, perhaps other faiths, and, of course, atheists and agnostics. One wonders that any religious symbols should be present in a public space controlled by a governmental entity -- source link
