Shogun Reviews: Luv is Rage 2 x Lil Uzi Vert Lil Uzi Vert is arguably the most popular member of today’s crop of new artists. He already has developed a crazy core fan base and his fair share of hits including “Money Longer” off of his “Lil Uzi Vert vs The World” and his smash hit “XO Tour Llif3″ off of this album. Uzi is definitely an enigmatic figure with his unique fashion sense, unorthodox artistry, and satanic references, but you cannot deny this young man’s star potential. This project illustrates just how special Uzi is. Uzi and producer, Maaly Raw, have definitely created a wave all their own, with elements of hip hop, pop, grunge rock, etc. Sonically, Uzi really flexes his versatility to perform over different beats. Uzi shows that he can flourish on fast-paced rock-inspired beats whether it is an upbeat catchy song like “XO Tour Llif3″ or a more mellow, ballad-like song like “The Way Life Goes.” Also, on tracks like “For Real” “444+222,” Lil Uzi Vert shows off his fast delivery over minimal, instrumentation-free beats. Uzi also uses instrumentation-full rap beats to show off his melodic capabilities on tracks like “Feelings Mutual” and, my favorite track, “Neon Guts” featuring super producer, Pharrell. The key word when describing Uzi’s sound is “versatility.” Uzi has a sound that keeps the youth entertained to go along with unique melodies and ad-libs that help tie Uzi’s sound together and make the project mesh as a whole. Uzi has always been consistent with his technique as well as his subject matter and this project is right in line with his standout work. Uzi is an artist who wears his heart on his sleeve has he freely explores love and heartbreak, especially on tracks like “Malfunction” where he voices lingering feelings about his public breakup with Brittany Byrd, and “Feelings Mutual” where he tells about how the repeated heartbreak has made him numb to feelings. He continues this trend the more thoughtful track, “The Way Life Goes” where Uzi offers hope for the heartbreak associated with his breakup, presumably, with Byrd. As the name of the project suggests, “luv” is a big theme throughout, and whether he is dealing with breakups, bragging about his new love interest in tracks like “Pretty Mami” or showing love and appreciation for his own mother in “Dark Queen,” Lil Uzi frequently shows he is in touch with his feelings. He couples this with more “turn up” tracks like “444+222″ and “For Real” where shows his uptempo rhyme scheme that afforded him the name, “Uzi.” No matter the occasion, Uzi can provide a track for the moment. While this album felt like another Lil Uzi Vert mixtape more than an album, there is a lot to like about it. Uzi shows versatility as he is definitely in touch with today’s music climate. His unique ear for music will carry him a long way as he continues to show off his immense star potential. Rating: 7/10D!D!D!D!D!D!D! -- source link
