SAND ‘TSUNAMI’ OFF THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA In recent weeks, Australia has suffered through a heat wave and massive bushfires (http://on.fb.me/ZVp50U) (http://on.fb.me/ZVoY5i). On Wednesday 9 January 2013 another environmental challenge occured - this time west of False Island (Mary Anne Passage) near Onslow, on the north-western coast of Western Australia. The wall of sand pictured is the result of sand and dust being gathered over land and blowing over the surface of the ocean. This image was captured by tugboat worker Brett Martin while he was at sea. The conditions at sea were reported to change suddenly from glassy and flat to a 2-metre swell and 70 km/h winds. Winds of up to 102 km/h were recorded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Dust storms such as this are normal in these areas at this time of year, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The storm was unrelated to tropical cyclone Narelle, which was bearing down on Western Australia close to the time of this event (http://on.fb.me/SwL4Jk). -TELhttp://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2013/01/sand-tsunami-australia.html More images here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.476930895681461.99466.269003509807535&type=1&l=b1aeb2a6d3 Image: Brett Martin/Perth Weather Live/AFP -- source link
