I heard that in Russia during the 90s, because people had so little money and also because drinking alone is heavily looked down upon (even more so than in the US), people would wait around outside liquor stores for the next random stranger to come along also wanting to buy a bottle of vodka.Then they would split the cost and drink it outside together (often without conversation), so that they weren’t “drinking alone”. -- source link
