sibyllae: Private William Cecil TickleKilled in action on the third day of the Battle of the Somme. William Tickle volunteered for army service on 7 September 1914 and, despite being underage, was accepted. He was then posted to France and saw action on the Western Front. He was one of many soldiers whose body was never found. After his death, his mother wrote beneath his photograph: ‘Mothers Billie Boy. 9th Essex Reg. Private W.C. Tickle 13510.
