“'Few now remember them,’ Tom murmured, ‘yet still some go wandering, sons of forgotten kings walking in loneliness, guarding from evil things folk that are heedless.'” ~ Tolkien - I often wonder about what draws us to the idea of “rangers”. After all, it’s how this Instagram really got started. As far as I know, Tolkien was this first to really develop on the idea of fantasy rangers. He drew heavily from medieval foresters and and woodsmen, the “Kings Rangers” are often described as a sort of game warden/rural sheriff/huntsman. But the idea that Tolkien developed in Rangers is more than that. It is a silent guardian. Humble, yet skilled. Born of the forest and at home in it. All their gear, weapons and clothing are designed to be of practical use in the forest. They lived dedicated to a cause, and they use all their skill, cunning and experience to see that cause victorious. We moderns do love our comforts and pleasures, so I think this singleminded, sacrificial dedication to a cause is especially attractive in a world full of people trying to find the easy way out.
