raffaelllllo:aeneas Honestly, Aeneas is one of the saddest heroes in Classical mythology. He’s pretty much an example for offstage drama. Everyone else sees the glory, only he can feel the pain. Because he represents the Roman ideals of stoicism and responsibility, his epic goes out of the way to show how he suffers on his journey. He loses his homeland, he has to abandon the woman he loves, he forces his people to march against the Latins and conquer despite the weight of his conscience…at every moment he’s jerked this way and that by the whims of the gods. He cannot rage like Achilles or boast like Odysseus or blaspheme like Ajax; he understands and submits to his destiny and his obligations to his people.
