psychanddeath:Some bloodstains cannot be seen with the naked eye during close visual examination. Because of this, chemical reagents such as Luminol can be used to find latent bloodstains. When sprayed on blood, Luminol creates a bright blue glow by reacting with iron in the blood’s hemoglobin. In the image above, it is quite clear that an attempt to clean up blood has been made. Luminol is actually a powder that contains nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. When needed during a crime scene, the Luminol powder is mixed with a liquid containing hydrogen peroxide. The Luminol reacts with the hydrogen peroxide and the iron just acts as a catalyst which means it helps to speed the reaction between the Luminol and the hydrogen peroxide. Only a tiny amount of iron is required to catalyze the reaction. Biochemistry! -- source link
