When we explore the difference between male and female heroes, several things jump out. One is: the male hero often has an iconic foe. Batman has the Joker, Superman Lex Luthor – Wonder Woman has no one. Heroism is measured in proportion to the type and magnitude of its opposition. I want to address a few female heroes who really do find their strength when faced with an opponent: the right hero for the right occasion, and that hero happens to be female.**From the haunting children’s rhyme to the iron claws, with a striped sweater, fedora, the raw-meat of his skin, this dream-stalking murderer really brought the nightmare. Reality bent to accommodate his desires, and he preyed upon people when they couldn’t defend themselves. Worse yet, he preyed upon young people, isolating them from the elders who should be protecting them. Freddy was at his best when pitted against an appropriate opponent – Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson. He menaces her in the bath, making her an image of passive vulnerability. In the beginning, Freddy perceives Nancy as defenseless. He doesn’t realize who he’s facing. Because Nancy Thompson will kick his motherfucking ass.Freddy is caught off-guard when she studies weapons, explosives, military strategy, and turns the predator into her prey. (Afterwards, in a sequel, she does something even more awesome: she comes back, to mentor and protect others.) Without Nancy to square off against, Freddy became Jerry Seinfeld with claws. -- source link
