Please pray for my indoor plants! Fungus gnats have been kicking my ass, so when I went to repot my ~2.5ft tamarind plant, I was SHOCKED to find mildew around it. (The plant looked and acted completely healthy on the surface…) So I completely washed off all old dirt off the few small roots (this plant can grow as a bonsai, in a small pot) and put it in a disinfected clean pot that gave it a little more vertical space, rather than width like the previous one. I panicked because I didn’t want the fungus gnats to return, and I poured a bunch of unwashed dune sand on top (because I didn’t know how long it would take to wash the sand). Well, turns out the dune sand was VERY salty and fishy smelling. The pile I grabbed some from might have been from someones beach adventure or IDK! IDK… And the plant has been completely wilty, even tho I staked him finally. His leaves don’t wake up to the sun. I’m so scared for him. So I took off the top sand and bought fresh plant-safe sand to put on top, and I’m hoping the salinity and dirt didn’t just kill him. As for the rest of my affected indoor plants (strobilanthus, coleus, cordyline), I gave them a diluted peppermint castile-soap drench, which instantly scared away the gnats, and then rinsed that out as much as I could, and top dressed with more sand. Idk if this will kill the plants, but I’m scared to find out what the gnats will do to them if I don’t act now. Especially because the strobilanthus (persian shield) is SO THIRSTY, ALL THE TIME, AND NEEDS A LOT OF WATER EVERY OTHER DAY. (It’s not even overwatering! You can tell how it needs water because it wilts so bad the leaves fall off, then I water and it perks back up within hours.) My other 3 indoor plants, and 2 orchids don’t ask for as much water and get the most sun, and aren’t next to the strobilanthus, so they haven’t been affected as far as I can tell, otherwise I’ll only top dress them, their pots are too small to put soap. But seriously, pls send healing vibes this way for my tamarind. He has been MY BABY for the past year, and I will cry so hard if he dies. I haven’t had any luck with other tamarind seeds because of the gnats ugh https://www.instagram.com/p/CWCXdh-p1P8/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
