Garden updates! ( TW insect grub worm last 2 pics!! ) My foxglove is still going strong more than a year later!! I’m not sure if the seeds are what’s keeping it growing, or if it’s new growths. I found both while I was cleaning it up, and accidentally broke off a new growth that had root nodes starting on it, so I repotted that before I added compost dirt to both. My dragonfruit and snapdragons are still also going nuts, both surviving the hot summer! I really don’t know what to do about the dragonfruit, tho. It just wants to crawl, it doesn’t want to grow upward. At least the snapdragons are cohabitating nicely with it. The taro plant I disturbed when I added new cardboard is very unhappy right now, and you can see the one in the other crate, that I didn’t need to disturb much, is actually faring pretty well considering we’ve been approaching freezing at nights here. I don’t expect either one will survive winter, but once the tops die off, I’ll cover them with paper bags to protect the tubers under the soil. (I’m not going to bother “harvesting” them this year, since last year there was only one partial corm, and the rest were just “suckers.”) My sweet potato vines have come back fully from being completely devoured by (I think) deer, but I still don’t know what to do with them. I don’t even know if this kind makes edible tubers, but I DO have some sweet potato sprouts that need to be planted ASAP. Maybe after this rain storm passes. And the grub!! Wtf!! It’s CLEAR. I’ve never seen a completely jelly-clear grub in my life, especially not in my yard. I’ve seen mealworms, gray fuzzy grubs, worms, slugs, eggs, all sorts of things, but not this. It was in a pot where I planted lychee seeds (that have only grown roots, no sprouts), so I didn’t know if it was an exotic species that came in the seed, but turns out these are common like “lawn white worm grubs” I think. But we definitely don’t have “lawns” on this property lmao. I’m gonna raise it to see what it turns into, since my mealworms just all turned into beetles, I have a spare critter carrier now. I really don’t know what I’ll do with any mealworm babies though, since my mantises are getting old now. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVdUPneJJ_M/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
