“Dear survivors, allies, family, friends, and supporters -Regardless of your political affiliations or beliefs, last night and this morning are difficult for many of us. This election cycle unearthed hate in many forms – among them sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, religious discrimination, ableism, and fear. We want you to know that we hear you. We hurt with you, and we are sitting with you, trying to process the emotional waves of shock, disbelief, and invalidation.It is easy to feel powerless when the future seems so uncertain. We have the agency to ensure that survivors everywhere hear that their experiences are valid, know that they are believed, and ensure that they are cared for no matter who is in office.There is power in belief. We believe you.We ask that you take care of yourself. As Audre Lorde stated, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Honor your experiences and your needs unapologetically.There is power in community. We support you.Our work is important, now more than ever. We are committed to ending sexual violence and supporting survivors. We will continue to hold institutions accountable for addressing civil rights violations and treating survivors with dignity. We will continue to center the voices of those disproportionately affected by violence, who remain silenced and marginalized in our society. We will continue to assert that Black Lives Matter, that LGBTQ survivors should have equal rights, and that survivors should be supported regardless of their immigration status.We are stronger together. We ask that you stand with us, however you are able.Activism comes in many forms. For some, it is simply getting out of bed. For others, it is supporting a friend. For others, still, it is working to change the policies and laws that frame this issue.
