sinesalvatorem:wutI did not realise people were making shit up on this scale alreadyThe slave-holding southern states wanted the election of the president to be proportional to the population of the states, because their states were larger and more populous. Meanwhile, the northern states were numerous and small, so they wanted votes to be distributed evenly among the states. So, congrats on reaching the point where political rhetoric can now be the literal exact opposite of the truth and still pick up notes. #FakeNews would be a little too polite for this. This news is over two hundred years old and still being faked. Literally HOW.If you want to complain about the electoral system being set up to unfairly reward slave owners, the actual thing to complain about would be the three-fifths compromise. Y’know, that thing where the constitution counts a slave as three fifths of a person for taxation and representation purposes.Slaves shouldn’t have counted at all, because every slave counted for three fifths more votes cast by the free inhabitants of that state. Which is to say, the people owning the slaves, rather than the slaves themselves. And yet, just the other day, I saw a post denouncing the three-fifths compromise as not fully recognising black people as people. Like, dude, do you want Virginia to have been more powerful? As a general rule, no one on the blue hellsite has any idea which bits of the constitution were meant to benefit whom and just makes shit up when it looks plausible. Please stop. Wikipedia has an article on the US Constitution. Please, for my own peace of mind, could everyone on this site give it a skim? -- source link
