Lydia’s courtship with the young, strapping man ended abruptly when he pulled her face near his and sank his teeth into her neck. She managed to free herself and run away, but quickly realized one vampire in pursuit was the least of her worries. Terrified and confused, Lydia made the mistake of running to the church and reporting the crime to the village elders. Though they were sympathetic to the young girl, her report left them little choice. They took her to the church cellar, riveted permanent manacles on her ankles and wrists, and permanently affixed them to chains anchored to the large stone pillar in the middle of the room. She protested loudly as they openly made arrangements to have the bricklayer come seal the doorway leading down to the cellar. Lydia pleaded with the men to drive her through with a stake, but they were having none of it. It would do no good before she turned, and she’d be too powerful for them to drive the stake if they waited until after. Defeated, Lydia stood and wept, knowing her assailant and the elders had just cursed her with eternal life - to be spent barefoot and heavily chained to this pillar, never to have human contact again. -- source link
