odditiesoflife:Drinking Horn of Count Ulrich IX. Montfort-Tettnang in Dragon Form, 16th Century Germany The drinking vessel designed by Cornelius Groß is in the shape of a dragon standing on a turtle floating on the waves of the sea. This is a post-Gothic version of the medieval drinking horn, possibly reaching back to memories of the medieval conception of the “griffin’s claw”. In the dragon’s gullet is placed an “adders’ tongue”. According to an old belief, this was supposed to protect the person drinking from the horn against poison. A triton is sitting on the back of the dragon, holding the coat of arms of the Counts of Montfort-Werdenberg. -- source link
