And catching up to day 6 of 31 days of my favorite scary movies, the Spanish horror film [REC]. By 2007 I was ready for the found footage, shaky cam style of horror movies, that had been inspired by the surprise success of The Blair Witch Project, to die off. But along comes [REC] to convince me there was value to be found in this style of film-making yet. Set primarily inside a single apartment building that has been completely quarantined by authorities, the central conceit of the movie, that you’re seeing footage from a TV film crew that accidentally gets locked inside while covering rescue workers from a local fire station, is done extremely well. What starts happening to people inside the building is similar to the effects of the Rage virus in 28 Days Later, but with its own particular twist. The movie uses the setting, sketchy lighting situation, and panicked reactions of the residents, emergency workers, and TV crew to maximum effect to keep you on the edge of your seat. The American remake Quarantine is also a good film in its own right, but if you think of seeing both, I highly recommend watching [REC] first. -- source link
