Because John simultaneously knows that he’s absolutely the most brilliant person he’s ever met, sees through Sherlock’s BS - but (unlike Mary) is nice enough not to call him on it much of the time - and it doesn’t change his opinion of or respect for Sherlock even the tiniest bit. Just the amount of acceptance here is phenomenal - that John sees him, really sees who he is, and still admires and likes him very much, would shoot a man to save him within about 30 hours of their first meeting - no one else in Sherlock’s life has ever been THIS to him. He’s probably been admired before. People have probably seen through his BS before. But both of those things, AND liked on top of it/despite it? Never. How could Sherlock have done anything else here but ask him for dinner? -- source link
