bigdeacyenergy: bigdeacyenergy: frottingwithfreddie: If they needed to fictionalise Mary, then why have her at all? Researching Mary gives you limited source material; she doesn’t give much information and what she does give is uninteresting, but that should have been enough to create a character whose role is “former girlfriend who accepts him no matter what, plus a confidante.” Someone who can dip in and out of the story whenever he needs her. But they seem to have promoted her to a permanent wife-like figure, given what her actor says about the proposal scene and how she dominates the trailers. The above statement about what their proposal represented is NOT HOW IT WENT DOWN AT ALL. It was Christmas day. Mary said she wasn’t expecting him to do that, so they clearly weren’t at a marriage stage of their relationship in her mind at least. Freddie seemed to do it on impulse and evidently regretted it because he never mentioned it again. It wasn’t even a proper ring, it was a scarab costume ring. Months later she saw a wedding dress and asked if she should start looking for dresses and he bluntly said ‘no.’ She had a feeling it wasn’t going to happen all along because he’d been acting strange and avoiding her for a while. So in reality, he made a mistake and let her down in a blunt manner and it’s not romantic at all. But this official book of movie stills indicates that the film’s going to pretend the proposal represented a life commitment. That’s pure sickly fromage and absolute bullshit. They’re not giving him a boyfriend character that he leaves her for, but instead giving him Paul fucking Prenter who is widely considered a negative force in his life. Paul’s page in this same book confirms they’re going with that! People have argued with me that “they don’t have time to have David Minns in a 2hr film” - yeah maybe that’s true, I understand that, but maybe if they didn’t have Mary at Biba, Freddie mooning after Mary at Biba, Mary’s father, Freddie crying as Mary gets in a car, a completely over-romanticised Mary proposal, there would be more room for his inner turmoil that leads to their split and his evolution into his true self with the man he left her for…? That’s what I’d like. The dramatic inner turmoil. The development of his character. That’s the true drama, not crying in the rain over a woman getting in a cab. If his struggle is not in it, I ain’t paying to watch it. There’s also this scene where Mary says some shit like “The audience ate you up, don’t you see what you could be?” as if she’s the one who’s giving him the confidence to be a star. Well, a while back I speculated, “I suspect they’re doing the ‘strong woman behind every great man’ trope and I hope I’m proved wrong” and people got angry at me for judging a film before release. Well seeing as that’s in the trailer, then it looks like I was right…and guess what, it’s bullshit, he was obsessed with fame long before he even met her so it’s another unnecessary ‘Mary & Freddie’s magical marriage bond’ scene. It’s all so uninspiring so far. These books are better TBH [x] [x] But the car scene in the rain wasn’t even about Mary as a whole? I can’t say more because I’ll end up spoiling it. Also Prenter wasn’t even a love interest in the film. I’ve since changed my mind and gone to see it, but I still stand by what I wrote about Mary being in it too much, and the characters being undeveloped though. If there was less Mary, they might have been able to do it.And I know PP isn’t a lover, but they do have him kissing him which is weird and doesn’t really lead anywhere so it left me there, like ‘why?’ -- source link
