The Italian Legion/ Garibaldi Guard,Officially known as the 39th New York Volunteers during the American Civil War, the Garibaldi Guard, also known as the Italian legion, drew most of its recruits from Italian immigrants. The Garibaldi Guard was named after Guiseppe Garbaldi, an Italian revolutionary who helped unify Italy during the 1850’s and 1860’s. Many of the soldiers of the Garibaldi Guard were veterans of the Italian Unification Wars and had served under Garibaldi. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the unit was their unique uniforms. They wore wide brimmed circular hats with decorative feather plooms. At the beginning of the war their uniforms were red, but later they switch to blue uniforms red trim. -- source link
