As an Ace person myself, this line resonant with me so much.People often treat Asexuality as a weird personality trait rather than an actual sexuality and while they may “tolerate” us in certain cases, they will only do that up until we “ruin their fun” by either not being attracted to someone or by viewing a person as Asexual.Online fandoms especially are guilty of this, I had people telling me that I was a "kinning weirdo" and how I shouldn’t have children because I would probably lock them up & not allow them to date simply because I mentioned that I like to headcanon that a fictional character (that they like to ship with other characters), might be Asexual like me. Because to them Asexual characters should only belong to 3 types and 3 types only:1- the childish Ace, who doesn’t experience sexual attraction simply because they’re too innocent to understand what sex/romance is, most of the time they’re like this as an excuse to have one or more characters crushing on them without anything coming from it because they’re too naive to notice the other person’s feeling. If they’re a male character, there might be a storyline about them trying to “man-up” by forcing themselves to go out with someone.2- the robot-like Ace, who doesn’t experience sexual attraction simply because they don’t experience any emotions at all. They’re made this way because the writers assumes that a person must be cold and lifeless if they have no interests in sex. Most often they’re usually a storyline about them becoming more “human” which almost always involve them being developing interests in another person.3- the awkward Ace, who doesn’t experience sexual attraction simply because they have social issues, maybe they’re too scared to get close to others, maybe they have PTSD or maybe they’re too preoccupied with an interest that comes in the way of their sex life, either ways they’re portrayed as Ace because they can’t get it, not because they’re don’t want to get it.And that basically sums up 95% of all fictional Asexual characters in existence, we don’t have many canon Ace characters in the first place and the few we have could be a lot better if people just gave Asexuality some respect instead of treating it as a quirk or trait. This rant kinda wrote itself, but I just wanted to say that I’m happy that we finally have a canon Ace character in a major publishing company like DC comics and I hope that we have more of them in the future (because just one is definitely not enough) -- source link
