onlymonica: Problem Child???Parents can be so prescient. It figures – they brought you into the world, watched your development, saw you go through stages. Rumor has it, they’re wizened adults themselves. (Famous Mark Twain line: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” So when they see things in your youth and call them out, you might want to listen. True story: When I was 16, I was sitting with my parents at the dinner table talking about, whatever. And I started to say ‘If I was able to be born again differently, the only thing I’d change is…’ and my Mom blurted quickly ‘…you’d like to be a girl’. And it was strange. Because it wasn’t what I was going to say, and wasn’t even remotely on my mind at the moment. My ‘gender dysphoria’ is very episodic. So I was sort of taken aback, but totally nonplussed by what she said. And I think I said something like ‘No, I’d just like to be a bit richer. Not superrich, but not having to worry about money as much.” And that was that.Years later, I sometimes wonder what my mom saw that I didn’t think I showed. I was a pretty ‘normal’ little boy - playing lots of sports, not playing with dolls. Even as a transwoman, I’d much rather play sports than play with dolls!!
