norfolksouthern: It’s time for Throwback Thursday, all the way back to 1932! #TBT The well-dressed gentlemen posing in this photograph worked as a track inspection party for the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, a Norfolk Southern predecessor. The railroad ran 238 miles from Hagerstown, Maryland, to Roanoke, Virginia. It was chartered in Virginia in 1867 and controlled by the Norfolk and Western Railway after 1883. N&W purchased it in 1890. Workers like these inspected the tracks visually for flaws so they could be repaired, thereby preventing accidents and improving the efficiency of railroad. -- source link
