The budenovka is a broadcloth cap stylized into the shape of the helmets of the old Kiev Rus. Origin
The budenovka is a broadcloth cap stylized into the shape of the helmets of the old Kiev Rus. Originally called the bogatyrka, and designed as part of a new Imperial Russian uniform that was meant to go into production in the latter part of the First World War, the cap was renamed the budenovka after Semyon Budyonny and adopted as part of the uniform of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. It remained in use until it was phased out in 1935. (A victim of the Purges, no doubt!) However, it was still to be found in some units all the way up through the early portions of the Great Patriotic War. -- source link
