The tricorne hat, so named for it’s three “horns,” was worn throughout the 18th century by civilians and military men alike. The tricorne is actually, technically, a round flop brimmed hat. The triangular shape comes from the brim being folded up into flaps, then usually tacked into the crown. The folded style comes from the practice of Spanish soldiers binding the wide, soft brims of their hats to better protect against the rain during the war in the Spanish Netherlands in the 1660s. -- source link
