The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948.  Eleanor Roosevelt felt it was the greatest achievement of her life. She was part of the first American delegation to the United Nations. When the UN established a permanent Commission on Human Rights, they unanimously elected Eleanor Roosevelt as chair.
