NEW - Bill Skarsgård in TOTAL FILM (UK, June 2022 issue)HOT RIGHT NOWBILL SKARSGÅRD IS SPREADING HIS WINGS. Photo by EMILY ASSIRAN/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES (taken January 2020 at Sundance)It needs to be something absurd,” said Bill Skarsgård back in 2020. “There needs to be something weird and strange and off with it. And inexplicable. Like, what is this?”Skarsgård, son of Stellan, younger brother of Alexander, was talking about what makes a great movie monster and applying the theory to his role of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in It. But he might just have easily been musing on the part of Eric Draven in The Crow, for the titular antihero is brutally murdered only to be brought back to the land of the living by crows, ready to exact his revenge. Absurd. Weird. Strange. Inexplicable. And so damn cool.“I need to be afraid, insecure and inspired all at the same time,” says Skarsgård on how he chooses his roles, so it’s little wonder he’s signed up for this reboot by King Richard scribe Zach Baylin and Ghost In The Shell director Rupert Sanders. The original 1994 film, based on James O’Barr’s ’80s comic series, starred Bruce Lee’s son Brandon, who tragically died on set when a prop gun was improperly loaded. The film was a hit, spawning three lesser sequels and a short-lived TV series, but though a big-screen reboot has been mooted for years, it’s never quite taken flight. Until now, with Skarsgård and FKA twigs, playing Eric’s fiancée (named Shelly Webster in the comics), shouldering a $50m production that will start shooting in Prague and Munich in June.It looks set to be a huge year for Skarsgård, who is also playing a mysterious character named Marquis in John Wick: Chapter 4, Philip II of Spain in Lee Tamahori’s action epic Emperor, and Sweden’s most notorious criminal, Clark Olofsson, in TV series Clark. It’s a thrillingly varied slate.“[I like to do] something that I haven’t really done before,” he explains. “That’s always something that inspires me. It’s like, ‘OK, this is a project or genre or something that I haven’t done, so let’s try it out and let’s have fun within those genre constraints.’”Now that’s a strategy to crow about.JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 OPENS IN CINEMAS ON 24 MARCH 2023.
