This month we had the chance to profile our member Kayleigh Saad, also known as Kiwi the Faerie and our new FFC Vice Preisdent! 1.  Bio / A bit about your professional background   I’ve been involved with art and fashion my whole life. I got into drawing at a young age, and was mostly interested in sketching women’s clothing. I was very influenced by fantasy art. I started making things like fairy wings and head dresses when I was 15, and I was instantly hooked on designing my own things to wear.  I got into putting together outfits and sets for photo shoots, and I started volunteering for the NB Film Co-op in 2007 as costume management on several short films. That finally lead to my interest in going to NBCCD. I graduated from Fashion Design in 2011 and have been involved with many projects since.  This includes my developing brand ‘Lunar Offerings’, which features fantasy and occult inspired clothing and accessories. I aim to help bring everything whimsical, weird and creative into the norm of the fashion world. I want to help people feel comfortable expressing themselves how ever they want, rather than just following trends. 2.  Where do you look for inspiration?  I’m mostly inspired by art, music, and nature. I love pre raphaelite and art nouveau artists. I’m in love with bohemian fashion from the 1970’s and vintage occult . Fairies have been a heavy influence on all of my artistic doings my entire life. My creations often contain found items and vintage materials. I love the challenge of turning old things into something new. I’ve been getting more into scrap and patch working lately, and I am really into symbolism. 3.  Who are some of your favourite designers?  Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and Thierry Mugler are my favorite big name designers.  These guys are so wonderfully over the top with plenty of beautiful details. I am more interested lately in up-cycling designers such as Katwise, Louise Black, and Selena Gibbous. Etsy.com is also a plethora of creative minds to get inspired by. 4.  As the new VP of Designers for FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?  I truly hope it brings together everyone in our community who is involved with fashion. Whether you are a designer, boutique owner, fashion photographer, hair stylist, etc… The more people we have interested, the more it benefits everyone involved. It is good practice to network and take advantage with who you have to work with at arms reach. By combining efforts,sharing different talents and asking people within our community for support, we can make our personal businesses and projects the best that the can be, and become more noticed, both locally and worldwide.   I feel like the council already has a very good start and it is only a year old. I think we are going to look back in 10 years time and see some impressive accomplishments. At this point, communication of what everyone would like to see come from this, is a key to making it successful! 5.  Tell us about Kiwi the Faerie, and how you came up with the idea.   Fairies were one of my favorites things as a kid. By the time I was a teenager I was drawing fairies all the time, and very inspired by artists like Amy Brown and Josephine Wall. The very first thing I ever made that was wearable was a set of fairy wings.  Quite a few years ago now, I remember thinking to myself that it would have been awesome to have had a fairy show up to my birthday parties as a kid. It didn’t dawn on me until a little over a year ago, that I could actually BE that birthday party fairy.   I had more then enough supplies in my closet to create multiple magical outfits, and it took no time to get it all together by the end of the warmer months of 2012. I started doing parties regularly in May 2013, and I’ve been booked for 1-2 parties a month since then! Depending on the season, I bring crafts and fun activities, I also provide face painting and special birthday wishes. I really have fun with this side project and the smiles and memories I help make are priceless. 6.  What’s next for you?  I will be designing an Autumn 2014 line for the NBCCD annual fashion show this April, and I will be designing a red dress for the Heart Truth Fashion Gala, for my first time this May. I am still trying to regularly list the accessories that I make on Etsy, but I won’t be giving that a lot of focus again until after these two shows are done.
