Jeff Crawford * Background Dog lover, passion-driven, Creative Professional Photographic Artist Jeff Crawford, is from Burton, New Brunswick. Jeff is a graduate of the NB College of Craft & Design’s Photography program, and former Theatre Lighting Designer/Technician. Jeff has a vast technical background, a unique eye for light, and a wide range of photography services to offer, such as: Event, Commercial, Portrait, Glamour, Boudoir, Sports, Fine Art Nude, Product, Fashion, Wedding, Landscape & Fine Art Photography. * How did you get in to Photography? While working in the theatre industry, I started freelancing as a projection designer, which was basically a digital scenic artist. I started integrating my own photographic elements into my designs, and found I was completely hooked on the craft. * What other Photographers inspire you? Blair Bunting, Renee Robyn and Joel Grimes * What are your favourite things about shooting Fashion? Fashion is a mentally stimulating and fulfilling challenge to shoot, as it pushes me to think outside of the box, and create a cohesive narrative that also causes the viewer to walk away with unanswered questions, while showing off fashion elements as well. * What project have you worked on that you enjoyed most and why? Fine art nude has been my staple with regards to gallery work. I find the results of that work the most rewarding, because everyone I collaborate with are by no means a professional model, in most cases, the men and women are modelling for the first time. There also tends to be a pattern of self discovery resulting in a major self esteem jump within the model themselves, from the experience. * How do you get yourself inspired for a photo shoot? Getting inspired for a shoot, requires that I have a completely clear mind, which comes from putting my mind at ease before the shoot, by ironing out all potential technical hurdles. Focusing on technical elements can quickly detract from the creative, during the shooting process. * How has Social Media effected your business? I have been lucky to have had a few of my artworks “go viral” via social media, which has, in conjunction with media exposure, helped expose my work to more markets than just our local area, resulting in higher level shooting contracts from out of town clients. * In a world where “everyone’s a photographer”, how do you set yourself apart from the hobbyists? In a world where everyone can be a photographer, not everyone can pre-visualize and execute concept to creation effectively. Over the past couple of years, I have become extremely focused on my long term goals, rather than working like a dog doing low end jobs, and not getting the time to exercise my own creative visions. I constantly strive to bring my highest level to which ever assignment I’m shooting, constantly pushing myself past my own limits, set by the previous project. * What are your thoughts on Instagram and other apps that are designed to sort of “do the work”? I personally don’t have or use Instagram, do to their privacy policy, but I find it to be somewhat of a fad and a gimmick. I do however have an appreciation for the square format, and a raw creative composition within it. I’m a big advocate for getting the shot as close as possible in camera, with the right type of light and composition, rather than relying on software to fix it after the fact. * What’s next for you? I hold my cards very close to my chest, but all I can say is that I have a few creations brewing. You will have to wait and see. Check out more from Jeff!
