christmasathogwarts: christmasathogwarts: a·phe·li·on /əˈfēlēən/ noun ASTRONOMY 1. the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. The solar system looked down on him knowlingly as he hid himself from the outside world in the Astronomy Tower. Quite a metaphor, that one. Not long ago – a year at most, really – he would have thought himself to be the Sun, with each of the Marauders as satellites around him, almost as if he exerted some sort of magnetic pull that kept them together as a single entity. But that had to be Lily Evans, he had since then figured. How else would she have been able to keep him coming back for more even as she looked thoroughly unimpressed by each and every one of his efforts to win her affections? Teenage boys weren’t especially known for having a particularly long attention span, yet to this day his eyes were still capable of scanning the Great Hall and picking her apart from the crowd as if it were something of a second nature to him, because it was what he did: he found his way to her even if he wasn’t willing to close the distance between them. It had little to do with the fact that she had bright red hair that fell almost down to her waist, in waves that easily could have fooled him into thinking they went on for days, and more to do with the fact that he was, in fact, stuck in the farthest of orbits from her, never once coming close enough to touch even as he wanted nothing more than to collide with her full force. Because Lily despised who he had once been to the point of not allowing herself to get to know who he had become, and that hurt more than he would have ever admitted to himself. And even though he had chosen to stop smoking, seeing her tangled in the arms of someone else as the Gryffindor team celebrated their win of the Quidditch Cup warranted him one last cigarette. He watched its slow burn with quiet fascination. Yet another perfect metaphor. -- source link
