thegetty: Some Mustache History For YouTop ‘stache:This style of mustache was worn by members of the Bulgarian legion who sought independence from the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 20th century. One of the most comprehensive visual archives of life and culture from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the rise of the Republic of Turkey, the Pierre de Gigord Collection of Photographs, includes this snap of a well-mustachioed Bulgarian porter at the Russian Embassy from 1865. Middle ‘stache:After Charles V sacked Rome in 1527, the formerly clean-shaven Pope Clement VII famously grew a beard as a sign of mourning and withdrawal from the world. The two rulers eventually reconciled, and in 1530 Clement VII officially crowned Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor as depicted in this scroll detailing the coronation’s procession—with a still-bearded Clement VII (left, on horseback) leading the way. Bottom ‘stache:A long, thin mustache and chin beard became the trademark facial hair for Emperor Napoleon III throughout his reign. Today, this style—seen on the emperor in this hand-colored albumen print from c. 1858—is often referred to as “the imperial” in his honor. -- source link
