amnhnyc: Here’s a giant marine worm you’ll never forget: Eunice aphroditois. This critter lurks beneath the ocean floor, growing as much as 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) long. It’s a ravenous predator that burrows underground with its head facing upwards, waiting for prey. It has five antennae that it sticks out above the sand to sense for and lure in unsuspecting fish. When curious prey get near, it strikes at lightning speed with powerful jaws, snatches its meal, and pulls it down below.
