phoebemontague:Art History Meme | 6/6 Themes or series or subjects└ Danae [Mythology]Character of Greek mythology, daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos. Since, according to a prophecy, the king would have been killed by the son of his own daughter, he locked Danae in a bronze tower to keep off her suitors. But Zeus entered in the tower under the form of golden rain and lay with her. From their union was born Perseus who later accidentally killed Acrisius with a disc. For the medieval culture, Danae was a symbol of chastity, but also an example of conception, by a virgin, thanks to the only divine intervention. The theme was therefore considered a foreshadowing of the Annunciation. -- source link
