Greetings from the sea ice just offshore from Utqiagvik, Alaska. Radford University students in an Arctic Geophysics research class are deploying sensors of their own designs and builds to measure properties of the ice and the surroundings. Some students here are measuring wind velocities at multiple heights to study the boundary layer at different locations on the ice. The others have deployed (shaded) temperature sensors to investigate heat transfer from the (warmer) ice surface to the (colder) air layers above. The students make their own microcontroller-based sensors for each course offering, starting from scratch, and with their own research ideas. -- source link
