davyalex: “.. and all things run. On that unfashionable gyre again.” W. B. Yeats This delightful photograph combines many of the archetypal elements that were common to so many UK schoolboys‘ uniforms from the 1960s to the 1980s: grey shirt, woollen pullover, briefly cut grey short trousers and turnover top knee socks. Many boys would have felt quite odd dressed any other way at the state primary school which they would have attended until they were 11 and quite a few boys at private preparatory schools would have expected to wear more or less the same outfit until they were 13. From about 1990 onwards however, state schools in particular tended to impose sweatshirt type tops, rather than conventional shirts and ties and dropped any requirement to wear shorts, even for the youngest boys. Curiously, after an interval of nearly 30 years, not only are more and more UK schools once again requiring a uniform which includes a shirt and school tie (a trend that seems to have been growing for a while now) but for the last few summers many older primary schoolboys seem to have started to wear grey school shorts again (albeit rather longer ones than those of the past) and quite a few secondary age boys have been demanding the right to wear them as well. -- source link
