World War II Memorial, National Mall, Washington, DC, 2007.Although there are memorials to more recent wars on and near the National Mall in Washington, there is no national memorial for the veterans of World War I which ended a century ago today. There is a small and rather hidden memorial to soldiers from Washington, DC but none to memorialize those from elsewhere in the United States who served in Europe during the conflict. With a design which Albert Speer would have found suitable for Hitler’s proposed capital of Germania, the World War II memorial occupies a prime bit of real estate on the National Mall between the Washington and Lincoln Memorials. -- source link
