Featured Member Profile for December is Holly Heartz! Bio / A bit about your professional background Fashion design was my first career choice but ended up studying nutrition. I have been working as a registered dietitian for 16 years and currently work in ICU, stroke, and family medicine at DECH. Besides medical nutrition I also specialized in sports nutrition. I have a MS in sport & exercise science and a sports nutrition diploma from the IOC. I have filled in for professors who have retired and who have gone on sabbatical teaching the basic nutrition course and sports nutrition course for the Kinesiology department. I also had a private practice focusing on athletes. I’ve seen many athletes from recreational to Olympic. I enjoyed this aspect of my practice however I recently closed my practice to free up time to pursue other interests. One of my other interest is in dogs. I am certified a dog trainer and have studied canine nutrition at Southern Illinois Univ. This past year, my sister (a veterinarian) and I started Dog Dietititan (dogdietitian.com). What got you into fashion? When I was in grade 2 or 3 I had a babysitter (she may have been in high school?) who I looked up to. I would hang out at her house and watch her sew. This concept of sewing fascinated me increased my desire to sew. The Christmas I was in grade 3 I got a sewing machine and supplies to make a skirt. I made the skirt that day and I have been sewing ever since. What inspires you to get dressed in the morning? Work. Otherwise I’d stay in my PJs all day. I strive for comfort. I’ve even contemplated wearing scrubs to work…just for the comfort. Who/What are your favorite designers/brands? My favorite designers are Cavalli and Vercace. Cavalli brings his artist background into his designs and this maybe one of the reasons I love his designs. I like Versace because of the designs created for the female form. Clothes are sexy and provocative plus I love the vibrant prints. I also like the look of steampunk designs. Probably for the intricate detail. As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve? I joined the council to connect with other local designers. I would like to see more promotion of and increased visibility of local designers. A benefit luncheon with models walking between the tables wearing local designs would be a great promotion but with Fredericton’s population not sure it would be practical. What’s next for you? I still have a desire to be a designer but for now it will remain a hobby. I have taken fashion courses when I’ve been at university and at NBCCD. Recently I’ve taken MFA-fashion courses from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. I will continue to take course whenever I can to build on my skills. Since I’m fascinated with canine behavior I will continue to study this field plus I will continue to work at Dog Dietitian. -- source link
