Tolkien, circa 1915In March of 1915 Tolkien wrote a poem about The Man in the Moon, who “had a silver shoon / And his beard was of silver thread”, and drew an illustration. The picture shows the Man in the Moon, with a long beard and tall hat, sliding towards earth on a thread.The man on the moon “was tired of this pearls and diamond twirls, of his pallid minaret, Dizzy and white at its lunar height, in a world of silver set”.
