Kind of Blue, 2017 Airbrush, Flashe, on Canvas 64” x 48” Courtesy of the artist @lostbros I hung out with LA based artist, Mario Ayala this past weekend. We talked about art, music, lowriders, LA/family traditions and more. Mario’s work is heavily influenced by a wide range of specific historical references and cultural expressions. He uses traditional techniques such as airbrushing and melds personal sentiment with shared cultural memories. For example this piece, ‘Kind of Blue’ (2017) depicts the demolition of the 6th street bridge which connected Boyle Heights to Downtown Los Angeles. You also see a jazz musician and a gold cage. After looking and talking about his work, I found myself reflecting on my own identity as an artist. What artwork have you felt most connected with?
